A Star, Early Heartbreaks, and Wins As Chapa Dimba National Finals Start in Meru

When two teams lift the Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom trophies on Sunday 23rd, scouts from within and outside Kenya will follow up on a name. A name that has appeared on the scoresheet for Barcelona Ladies for the umpteenth time now. Jane Njeri helped her team win the Central Regional Finals with a brace and she today added four goals to blow away St.Mary’s Ndovea in their path to the finals.

To fit all the quarter-final fixtures today, the organizers of the Chapa Dimba tournament split the games across two stadia. An original expected seven games dropped to six after Bishop Njenga Girls from Western did not turn up for their fixture. As a result, a lucky Kitale Queens from Rift Valley waltzed their way into the semi-finals set for Friday.

Quarter Final Results

Acakoro Ladies from Nairobi mounted a spectacular comeback to win 3:2 against Ndhiwa Queens therefore effectively dashing the hopes of the region. Despite an early lead by Ndhiwa Queens, an emphatic Catherine Awuor (Acakoro) netted a hattrick to bring back her team to contention. Acakoro proceeds to face Changamwe Ladies from Coast in their semi-final on Friday.

Speaking to the media, an impressed Pauline Awuor (Acakoro Ladies coach) said:

“We’ve had a good victory today. The matches were tough but the girls were tactical and focused. Our opponents had more physique and well-built but we played a more tactical in our game. We never underestimated our opponent and that has always been our secret to success. We look forward for another victory tomorrow in the semis.”

St. Mary’s Ndovea (Eastern) could not handle the heat from Barcelona Ladies (Central) as the slumped to a heavy defeat of four goals to nil. They pin their hopes on their star player to deliver the goods once more in their quest for victory in the semis on Friday.

Meanwhile, Lugari Blue Saints from Western were the better team as they won 3:0 against a fancy named Super Solico from Eastern Region. Lugari Blue Saints are definitely a team to watch as they lock horns with Manyatta United from Nyanza in the semis on Saturday. Manyatta United booked their semi-final spot after proving to be too much for Central regional champions Euronuts late in the day. They beat them 4:1.
