Recount a Dramatic Chapa Dimba Season as Mouth-watering Finale Looms Over Meru

In the end, it will be a Chapa Dimba victory delivered in a pristine Kinoru Stadium in Meru. Girls, boys, coaches, and fans roaring in delight as their prayers and efforts finally come to fruition. However, others will huddle, slumped in defeat, contemplating what could have been. It has been one long road to this weekend, but all agree that it was worth every step of the way.

Where it began

After a successful 2017/18 season that saw Kapenguria Heroes (Boys) and Plateau Queens (Girls) bag the honors, a fervent new chapter started in preparation for this season. As usual, the calls put out to soccer teams across the country resulted in many entries by the deadline of 30th September 2018. Several new entrants weaved their way into the group stages while the veterans that have done well since the tournament’s start took another stab at becoming champions. Sadly, last year’s champions did not make it this far.

For this season, Chapa Dimba na Safaricom partnered with Spanish LaLiga to add onto an existing partnership with Football Kenya Federation (FKF). This new partnership led to the inclusion of former Liverpool and Barcelona winger Luis Javier Garcia, who will attend the National Final between June 20th – June 23rd, 2019.

The Regional Finals

Nyanza, Western, North Eastern and Central

Defending girls’ champions Plateau Queens suffered defeat in the group stages paving way for new royalty Ndhiwa Queens who will represent Nyanza in the National Finals. Manyatta Boys carry the hopes of the region into the finals as they face Euronuts from Central.

In the Western Regional Finals, intense competition at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega yielded Lugari Blue Saints (Boys) and Archbishop Njenga (Girls) as the bannermen and women of the soccer hotbed.

Garissa Teachers College hosted a thrilling final which sent Berlin FC (Boys) into a frenzy as they qualified for the National Finals. Abdallah Marro, spotted as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), will be a player to watch this weekend.

Closer to the capital, Central region defending champions Euronuts (Boys) kept their title and aim to finally tilt the scales in their favour this year. Last season girls’ champions Limuru Starlets did not pile onto their earlier luck and surrendered the region’s pole position to Barcelona Ladies.

Nairobi, Rift Valley, Eastern and Coast

In the capital, a persistent South B United (Boys) triumphed over Jericho United to clinch a position in the National Finals. Acakoro Ladies snuffed life out of Carolina For Kibera to become Nairobi region girls’ champions. They await a tough test against Nyanza’s Ndhiwa Queens this weekend.

Meanwhile, a bruising battle at the Eldoret ASK Showground ended when Kajiado’s Al-Ahly (Boys) beat Tumkas FC to win the Rift Valley regional title. They will accompany Kitale Queens (Girls) who thrashed Itigo Girls to comfortably continue to the National Finals.

In the Eastern Finals, Supersolico (Boys) and St. Mary’s Ndovea (Girls) emerged top of the pile as they fought to victory under sweltering heat at the Kitui Showground. St. Mary’s Ndovea Captain Margaret Mutua was excited as she thanked the sponsors Safaricom for the prize money that was a motivator to the team.

Completing the list of finalists are Shimanzi Youth (Boys) and Changamwe Ladies (Girls), who triumphed and placed Mombasa on the map after the Coast Regional Finals. Shimanzi, a crowd’s favorite, wiped their tears after not getting to the National Finals last year, by overcoming their rivals Maweni United.

The National Finals

All eyes shift to Meru County this weekend as the finalists try to win something they will always be proud of. As the competition grows and attracts a bigger fanbase, even prominent football enthusiasts are diving into the fray.

Aden Duale, Garissa’s directly elected MP, tweeted: “My favourite team, Berlin FC from Garissa Township will represent North Eastern region in #ChapaDimbaNaSafaricom national finals to be held in Meru County from June 20th to 23rd. The first game will be against Al-Ahly from Rift Valley region. I wished them all the best.

The players watched how a Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom All-Stars team lay claim on the global scene during a Spain Tour last month. Deep in their hearts, they know they want the same in the next pick.

As fans await the finale, teams continue to prepare and study their opponents. Some might think they landed a simple route to the final match. Maybe? Time will tell.

The winning teams will each walk away with KES 1 million in cash. In addition, they will get phones and airtime. However, those who will not make it will still get consolation and hope that next time will be better.
