F & F Predictions: Matchday 36May 8, 2015
Everton v Sunderland
Head to head: P179 W79 D31 L69
Last five meetings: W2 D1 L2
Fabian says: The hosts come of a rather surprising defeat at Villa Park while the visitors are buoyed by that gutsy dispatch of Southampton. As much as Sunderland are fighting for dear life to avoid the drop, Everton have nothing much at stake and that should bode well for their bounce-back. Sunderland may have the fight in them, but the quality to grab three points at Goodison Park? Not quite.
Fridah says: I doubt that Everton will succumb to a second defeat in a row and I also doubt that Sunderland will go down without a fight. I reckon that the teams will share the spoils at Goodison Park.
Did You Know: Sunderland have the lowest top scorer- Conor Wickham (5 goals)
Sunderland have won none of their last eight BPL matches away (D4 L4) while Everton have lost just one of their last 14 (W7 D6 L1).
Aston Villa v West Ham United
Head to head: P108 W37 D32 L39
Last five meetings: W1 D2 L2
Fabian says: Newly crowned Barclays Player of the Month for April Christian Benteke is firing on all cylinders and should be up for this one with a spring in his step. The Hammers are assured of a mid table finish and so shouldn’t offer too much trouble to the revitalized Villains.
Fridah says: I’m with the Villains on this one. They are on some scintillating form and they will be looking to avoid getting dragged into the vicious relegation battle. Benteke’s revival has come just at the right time.
Did You Know: West Ham haven’t won any of their last 10 away BPL matches.
Tim Sherwood is one of the 11 managers to take charge of more than 30 BPL matches and win more than half of them. (53.1%)
Hull City v Burnley
Head to head: P60 W19 D12 L29
Last five meetings: W1 D0 L4
Fabian says: This is a thorough relegation six-pointer and you can be sure neither side will be lacking in desire. Burnley though just can’t seem to score goals and for that you’ve got to fancy the Tigers to squeak through.
Fridah says: Burnley were unfairly denied a fighting chance after that red card in the game against West ham. They seem all but out of the PL. However, I think they’ll take some teams down with them and Hull will be the first victim.
Did You Know: Hull City have never won a BPL match in the month of May. (Ominous and scary)
Ahmed Elmohamady has started all of Hull’s BPL matches since they were promoted to the top flight (73 matches)- more than any player in the BPL since the beginning of the 2013-2014 season.
Leicester City v Southampton
Head to head: P49 W23 D26 L31
Last five meetings: W3 D0 L2
Fabian says: Is there any stopping the Foxes in their hunt? The Saints being out-fought by strugglers Sunderland last weekend seems to further amplify the above assertion. Leicester should just about inch closer to survival in front of their fans.
Fridah says: This is a tough one but I expect Leicester to keep up the fight. They are on a good run and they have every reason to fight for their stay in the Premier League. I think the Ostrich burgers will continue to work the magic, oh and probably a reignited Ulloa.
Did You Know: The Foxes have won five of their last six while the Saints have picked up just one point from their last 5.
Shane Long has three PL goals for Southampton this season. Two came against Leicester in the reverse fixture in a 2-0 win.
Newcastle United v West Bromwich Albion
Head to head: P124 W45 D33 L46
Last five meetings: W3 D1 L1
Fabian says: From the manager claiming he’s the best in the business to abusing his own players to the captain penning an open letter to the fans, it’s all happening in the North East. West Brom arrive on a high of beating Manchester United to all but secure their top flight status and will look to take advantage of the hullabaloo at Newcastle. A ninth successive loss in on the cards for the hosts.
Fridah says: Newcastle United welcome Papiss Cisse back after a lengthy ban. I’m not entirely sure he is what they are missing though. I think the horrible run will continue. West Brom should be excited with that away victory against Manchester United and they should be on a high.
Did You Know: Newcastle have won 10 and lost only 3 in their last 17 vs. West brom.
Victor Anichebe’s favorite opponent is the Toons. He has four goals against them, his highest against any opponent.
Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur
Head to head: P88 W25 D20 L43
Last five meetings: W1 D1 L3
Fabian says: Allegedly, Spurs will be trying all possible to avoid qualification to Europa League and a points donation to Stoke City will go along way into achieving that. Yes, that’s what I reckon will happen.
Fridah says: This has the making of a mid-table fight. There is not much for the teams to fight for but they fight anyway. Both teams have been rather inconsistent of late and they would both like a win to boost their confidence.
Did You Know: There have been six red cards in the last six matches between these two sides at the Brittania Stadium.
Stoke have conceded a league high 43% of goals from set pieces this season.
Crystal Palace v Manchester United
Head to head: P46 W29 D10 L7
Last five meetings: W3 D1 L1
Fabian says: Manchester United on a wretched losing streak, headed to buck that trend at a usually raucus Selhurst Park. Has all the hallmarks of a riveting clash, hasn’t it? I don’t know the last time the Red Devils lost four in a row, but for the banter, this would be a good time to make true that fact. Plus, Palace are due for a better result after their past few losses.
Fridah says: The Eagles have surpassed all expectations for the season under Pards. The same cannot be said of Manchester United under LVG. Alan Pardew will be looking to get back to winning ways, as will Louis van Gaal. It could be a day of records broken.
Did You Know: the Red Devils have won 11 and lost none of their last 13 against the Eagles.
United have not lost four BPL matches in a row since February 1979.
Manchester City v Queen Park Rangers
Head to head: P52 W22 D18 L12
Last five meetings: W3 D2 L0
Fabian says: QPR are going down. No two ways about it. For most of the Citizens, they are now fighting for their City careers so really they will be up for it. And Kun Aguero looks to secure that Golden Boot too.
Fridah says: QPR seem to love the relegation battle. The ideal payback for the Sergio Agüero some seasons ago to clinch the league would be to get three points to enhance their chances of survival. However, the Citizens seem reignited and want all the three points. Draw? I think so.
Did You Know: The Citizens have lost just one of their last 15 matches at the Etihad Stadium.
Agüero has scored three in four league matches against QPR.
Chelsea v Liverpool
Head to head: P173 W61 D37 L75
Last five meetings: W4 D1 L0
Fabian says: The underlying question is how Jose Mourinho will approach this match. That could be the difference between a Chelsea win and a share of the spoils. That said, should be a dour encounter.
Fridah says: Liverpool still have hopes of catching up with United and therefore this is a must win match for them. Chelsea reached their goal and Jose Mourinho may not care about the result much. Too bad this is not last season when the fixture meant something. I still think Chelsea will win though.
Did You Know: Liverpool have lost just one of their last four visits to the Stamford Bridge. (W2 D1 L1)
Liverpool have four points from their last seven against the present top 4. (W1 D1 L5)
Arsenal v Swansea City
Head to head: P19 W9 D4 L6
Last five meetings: W3 D1 L1
Fabian says: Another Monday Night assignment for the high flying Gunners and they don’t seem to have a problem navigating those. Swansea are already having their best ever season and that should somehow bode well for the home side.
Fridah says: The Gunners are aiming to finish higher in the table than has been the norm in the recent past and they will be all out for the three points. The rise of Coquelin means that Swansea won’t have an easy time as they did in the reverse fixture. I think Arsenal will continue their good run.
Did You Know: 21 of the last 22 goals in this game have all been in the second half.
In the BPL, these sides have met seven times with 3 wins a piece and a draw. Of the 10 points that Swansea has earned from Arsenal in the BPL, they have come from behind to get seven.
