Fab and Fridah’s Picks – MW8

Fab and Fridah’s Picks – MW8

October 15, 2016 0 By Fabian

Chelsea v Leicester City

Last Five Meetings: W3 D1 L1

Fabian Says: Antonio Conte is a man under siege, if we’re to read anything into several bookies suspending betting on him being the next Premier League manager to face the axe. Now, as a result, two things may happen; the Chelsea players may put on an almighty fight to save their manager, or decide they have had enough of his Italian passion and catalyze his ouster. In short, I don’t see a draw in this one, but neither do I see the champions taking advantage of the speculation. Conte’s reign lives on…well, for another weekend at least.

Predicts: 2-1

Fridah Says: This is a tough game for both teams. Stamford Bridge isn’t the fortress it once was and Leicester will fancy their chances. I don’t think that the game will have a winner. Going for the draw in this one.

Predicts: 1-1

Arsenal v Swansea City

Last Five Meetings: W1 D1 L3

Fabian Says: It was this fixture earlier on in the year that put to bed any lingering aspirations the Gunners harboured for the title and that will not have been forgotten. In the spirit of Making America Great (Again) the good people in the Swansea board have installed former United States coach Bob Bradley as the one to steady the fast sinking ship. As decent as the American is, he probably wouldn’t have wished to start life in English football with a trip to the in form Arsenal. Let’s just say his rebuilding work begins at the end of these 90 minutes today.

Predicts: 3-0

Fridah Says: The last five meetings show that this is another Arsenal bogey team. The team has been looking good but they have to be aware of the threat of the Swans – especially as they have a new manager. However, I think the Gunners will have a good game and come away with the three points.

Predicts: 3-1

Bournemouth v Hull City

Last Five Meetings: W0 D2 L3

Fabian Says: Speaking of managerial appointments, Mike Phelan’s role was made permanent by Hull City during the international break. I don’t think that will have much of a bearing on what happens in this encounter, as probably the improving Cherries will have more in their armour to get the result.

Predicts: 2-1

Fridah Says: The Cherries do not have a good record against the Tigers but they should be comforted by the fact that they have a Calum Wilson coming back to life and that they are on a good run. I think the Cherries will finally get a win over Hull.

Predicts: 2-1

Manchester City v Everton

Last Five Meetings: W2 D2 L1

Fabian Says: Senor Guardiola finally tasted defeat in English football when his side was hassled out of town by a fired up Spurs. He will have mulled over what went wrong in the two week break and should be more that raring to make amends on home soil against an Everton side that may well use the Spurs pressing template. Both managers are students of the Cruyff Football but I doubt they will cancel out each other.

Predicts: 3-1

Fridah Says: Manchester City were exposed by Tottenham and I think teams will now see this as a chance to take points from them. Everton could be a big threat if they avoid being wasteful upfront. I think however that City will drop points in an entertaining match.

Predicts: 2-2

Stoke City v Sunderland

Last Five Meetings: W1 D2 L2

Fabian Says: The Potters have yet to get their season off the ground, but their fight at Old Trafford to rescue a point showed that just maybe things are beginning to look up. Sunderland too are struggling and even though they don’t seem to have that big a problem in getting the goals, defensively they are all over the place. For some reason I think Stoke will get their first win of the season today.

Predicts: 2-1

Fridah Says: Stoke City are still having trouble. They are the only team in the league yet to register an assist. Sunderland have even bigger issues and they have to fight hard to get anything against Stoke. However, I they have the chance. They have a pretty decent record against Stoke and they can get something here.

Predicts: 1-1

West Bromwich Albion v Tottenham Hotspur

Last Five Meetings: W1 D3 L1

Fabian Says: Look, Spurs are bound to lose at some point and with them returning from the internationals and with one eye on their midweek trip to Germany, this could be the time for a loss. Tony Pulis is the master at party pooping and he will do the job. Also, Spurs’ reject Nacer Chadli may have something to say on the pitch about that.

Predicts: 1-0

Fridah Says: This is not a ground that Tottenham enjoy visiting. This Premier League clash has the second highest proportion of draws (45%) for teams that have met a minimum of 20 times. Only Everton vs. Leicester has more (65%). Tottenham are looking really good and they should be able to beat this Pulis team though. Despite this, I don’t think they will.

Predicts: 1-1

Crystal Palace v West Ham United

Last Five Meetings: W2 D1 L2

Fabian Says: Dimitri Payet is on fire. Christian Benteke is flames. This is a London derby. Surely, there should be goals, yes? Now, who will win? I don’t know. Palace were on a good run before the break and you get the feeling their momentum has been snapped. I’m going for the upset, Hammers winning finally.

Predicts: 2-3

Fridah Says: Crystal Palace have really improved and they are looking like a team that can beat any team on a good day. West Ham are in quite the slump. There was a break and maybe they were able to iron out their issues then. Palace have gone for seven games without a win in a London Derby. Could this be the end of that poor streak? I believe so.

Predicts: 2-1

Middlesbrough v Watford

Last Five Meetings: W0 D2 L3

Fabian Says: Boro are finding life in the big time difficult and it’s probably about to get even tougher. Then again Watford are not so good travelers so it’s a bit tricky to call, this one. Pressed to the wall, Boro should win.

Predicts: 2-1

Fridah Says: Deeney is looking for his century of goals. He is at 99 goals and I think he will get this. However, Boro will be a big threat. Watford have conceded six headed goals this season, a league high while Boro have scored 4, a number only bettered by  Palace (6) and West Ham (5). Middlesbrough will know where to attack Watford. The game will probably end in a draw.

Predicts: 2-2

Southampton v Burnley

Last Five Meetings: W3 D1 L1

Fabian Says: I just can’t see Burnley being able to stop or even live with the Saints. This is probably my easiest pick of the weekend, a Saints win.

Predicts: 2-0

Fridah Says: The Saints are looking good this season. They are a difficult unit to break down and this will be a tough one for Burnley. I reckon that the Saints will get all the three points.

Predicts: 2-1

Liverpool v Manchester United

Last Five Meetings: W1 D1 L3

Fabian Says: The fixture of the Matchweek is preserved till Monday night and it’s not hard to see why. Liverpool are playing exactly in the mould of their eccentric manager Juergen Klopp but the same cannot be said of Man United who are still finding out what it takes to play for Jose Mourinho in the way he wants. Liverpool are running more distance and making more sprints than almost every other team in the division and this presents them with a huge advantage over United who don’t seem to fancy too much running – they have been outrun by all the other 19 teams so far. Klopp’s heavy metal football will make it a long harrowing night at the raucous Anfield for Jose’s men.

Predicts: 3-1

Fridah Says: Liverpool will not want to look at their recent record against Manchester United. They have lost the last four PL clashes which is their worst losing streak since March 2008. This season however, they are doing really well and they can score goals. They will be a tougher team for the Red Devils to break this time. Klopp also has a decent record against Mourinho (W3 D1 L1) and I think this will be extended.

Predicts: 2-1
